Marr College Troon

We led the design and construction team in the successful delivery of upgraded classroom facilities for the science department contained within the original B-listed main building of Marr College. The works to the Biology and Chemistry Laboratories together with associated ancillary accommodation required to be undertaken during term time, with the works completed prior to the return from the Easter recess.

We worked closely with the head of department and staff to ensure that the design brief was fully developed to provide a solution, which met their exacting requirements. The safety of all occupants was a major consideration, both during the construction operations, and within the completed refurbished accommodation.

The first element of works carried out involved the careful removal of existing asbestos material within the fume cupboard between the labs followed by the introduction of new heating, electrical, gas supply pipe-work and other services. Upgraded gas detection and isolation safety controls together with fire detection and alarm systems were also installed. Existing fire separation within the department was assessed and additional barriers constructed in order to fully compartment areas of fire risk. New self closing fire doors were fitted to each classroom and materials selected for wall, floor and ceiling finishes which were robust, easily maintained and with low surface spread of flame. A specialist supplier was appointed for the laboratory fitments and equipment.

The contractor liaised on a daily basis with the departmental staff to ensure that all were party to the proposed works and the necessary restrictions on access together with periods where more noisy operations could be accommodated. Weekly progress reports were distributed to the team and fortnightly progress meetings held in order that all parties were able to provide information to facilitate progress.

The project was completed on time and within budget. It was considered a success to the extent that a follow on project was instructed that refurbished further classroom accommodation using the same team, with the agreed systems of communication and reporting in place throughout its delivery.
